Compound of 'looks' (physical appearance) and 'maxxing' (maximizing), originating from incel message boards in the 2010s, specifically the PSL forums (Puahate, Sluthate, Lookism).
The systematic pursuit of maximizing one's physical attractiveness through methods ranging from basic grooming and fitness ('softmaxxing') to cosmetic procedures and surgery ('hardmaxxing'). Rooted in a deterministic worldview ('blackpill') that physical appearance—particularly genetically-determined features like facial bone structure—is the primary factor in romantic and social success. The practice treats attractiveness as quantifiable and optimizable, often using pseudoscientific rating systems and terminology borrowed from incel subculture.
- Softmaxxing: skincare routines, gym, haircuts, posture correction, 'mewing' (tongue posture to allegedly reshape jawline).
